GOLDEN STAR MUST COME AGAIN IN WASSA AMENFI

PRESS STATEMENT

GOLDEN STAR MUST COME AGAIN IN WASSA AMENFI

WEDNESDAY, 22ND MARCH,2017

We wish to communicate our dissatisfaction with the conduct of the management of Golden Star (Bogoso/Prestea) Limited, concerning the processes leading to the commencement of mining activities scheduled to take place around Marfokrom community within the Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area.

We have monitored with keen interest and are thus disappointed with the deliberate and well calculated attempt by the Management to neglect, disregard and also betray the intelligence of the people, especially the youth, of Wassa Amenfi.

Our involvement in the harnessing of such a valuable resource cannot be down played to make us feel alienated from such an industrious venture within our own land. Adequate community mobilization and sensitization has not been conducted with regards to how best our people can and should get involved in the project.
We are therefore vehemently recommending that the following measures be put in their proper perspections to create an effective cooperation among all stakeholders.

i. A well recognised community hearing should be organised to help us articulate the appropriate and feasible measures for the Environmental Impact Statement as well as the Social Responsibility Agreement

ii. A proper and detailed explanations of contractual agreements should be made to our community members to help ensure which direct and indirect employment opportunities are available for our ever-ready and equally employable youth in this huge project,

iii. A proper mobilistion and empowerment should be conducted to enhance the recognition of our local contractors, who must be the principal contractors in the haulage exercise, to help curb the teaming unemployment in our area, just as the Company facilitated in the Prestea Haulage Contract Model, which we are fully aware of details and its obvious community impact.

We wish also to state categorically that, we of Wassa Amenfi are one people and that though this mining venture directly affects about twenty-five communities, we are all united in one voice and roar to ensure that this investment benefits Wassa Amenfi and not only a selected and segregated few.
Therefore, our collective concerns should be appropriately addressed within the shortest possible time before any other matters concerning the exploration exercise can begin.
A four-day ultimatum is thus guaranteed for appropriate consultations before our next line of action is rolled out. And we are serious about this very call, that WE CANNOT BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED!
Long Live Youth of Wassa Amenfi!!
God Bless Wassa Amenfi!!!
Thank you,
